Game of Thrones season 6 premiere’s title and synopsis are intriguing as ever

We’ll soon be resuming our weekly visits to Westeros and Essos, so in preparation for the Game of Thrones season 6 premiere, HBO has unveiled the first episode’s title and synopsis. After the torturous cliffhanger that ended season 5, any and all pieces of information are appreciated. Like drops of water in the desert, they’re precious, even if they can’t quench that awful thirst.

Picking up where season 5 left off — (spoiler alert!) with Jon Snow bleeding out in the snow, Daenerys surrounded by trouble, and Cersei’s life turned upside down — the season 6 premiere, candidly called The Red Woman, will kick off the 10-episode season right where we left off last year: “Jon Snow is dead. Daenerys meets a strong man. Cersei sees her daughter again,” reads the synopsis.

HBO also shared information about the general nature of season 6, hinting at the drama to come:

Following the shocking developments at the conclusion of season five, including Jon Snow’s bloody fate at the hands of Castle Black mutineers, Daenerys’ near-demise at the fighting pits of Meereen, and Cersei’s public humiliation in the streets of King’s Landing, survivors from all parts of Westeros and Essos regroup to press forward, inexorably, towards their uncertain individual fates. Familiar faces will forge new alliances to bolster their strategic chances at survival, while new characters will emerge to challenge the balance of power in the east, west, north and south.

Unfortunately for Snow fans, there’s no more denying that the beloved character was killed. However, we’re not convinced that Snow (played by Kit Harington) has met his true end; we all know death isn’t necessarily permanent in the fantasy world of Game of Thrones. There has been speculation that Melisandre (Carice van Houten) may be involved with bringing him back, so it’s especially intriguing that the episode is titled The Red Woman. Maybe the red priestess will bring back the man who once rejected her advances.

Meanwhile, we’ll have to wait to learn more about this mysterious “strong man” that Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) is set to encounter. We do know, however, that the meeting between Cersei (Lena Headey) and her daughter will be tragic, as Myrcella (Nell Tiger Free) is returning to Kings Landing as a corpse after being poisoned. Based on what we’ve seen in trailers, Cersei is going to have a serious lust for revenge this season, and that could make her very dangerous — you don’t want to corner a viper, after all.

The premiere episode was written by David Benioff and D. B. Weiss, and is directed by Jeremy Podeswa. Game of Thrones season 6 premieres on HBO on April 24 at 9-8 CST, and we can’t wait.

Things are going to get bigger, sadder, and — somehow — even darker in The Last of Us season 2. That won't come as much of a surprise to those who have played 2020's The Last of Us Part II. The infamously divisive game shocked players four years ago with its unexpected twists and relentless violence. Now, based on its recent trailer, it looks like The Last of Us season 2 is going to stick fairly closely to the bleak path laid by its parent game.
