Hillary Clinton will return to Saturday Night Live this weekend for its 41st season premiere, according to the New York Times.
SNL has a long history with the former First Lady and current Democratic presidential candidate, even bringing her onto the show during her 2008 presidential campaign. During that appearance alongside Amy Poehler, Clinton was mocked by the former SNL cast member for her high-pitched, nervous laugh. But this time around, the presidential candidate has lots more to lose — and the show’s host is none other than tongue-extending/oft-brazen pop star Miley Cyrus.
Taking a page from the modern political handbook, Clinton is planning the appearance to “show her funny, personable side” according to the Times. While the candidate’s campaign would not confirm the SNL gig, sources told the publication that she’ll guest alongside SNL’s current Hillary Clinton impersonator, Kate McKinnon. The proposed skit has her mocking herself trying to appear “more authentic” while pursuing the presidency.
In the spring, SNL newcomer Kate McKinnon performed a series of skits playing Clinton. One particularly memorable segment has Clinton’s aide, played by Vanessa Bayer, giving McKinnon advice on how best to announce her presidency through a social media video in her Chappaqua, New York home office.
“Citizens! You will elect me! I will be your leader!” says McKinnon’s Clinton to the camera before her aide tells her to tone down her speech. SNL alum Darrell Hammond, who played Bill Clinton on the show throughout the ‘90s, also appears on the skit.
CNN notes that (the real) Clinton mentioned the upcoming performance in a recent interview with Channel 7 News in Boston. “I have fun doing this,” she said. “I’ve been on it before … I’m just looking to have a good time. I think we have a fun deficit in our country. I’m going to try to fill that one, too.”
If Miley Cyrus — who recently hosted (and had a nip slip at) the VMAs — is involved, the appearance may be more than Mrs. Clinton bargained for.
