Jack Ryan season 4 was supposed to be John Krasinski’s final outing as the titular CIA analyst. In reality, Krasinski’s farewell only applied to television.

Amazon MGM Studios announced Krasinski will star in a Jack Ryan movie. Wendell Pierce and Michael Kelly will also reprise their roles as James Greer and Mike November, respectively.

Krasinski, Allyson Seeger, and Andrew Form will produce. Executive producers include David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, John Kelly, and Carlton Cuse. The movie is produced in association with Paramount Pictures and Skydance.

Jack Ryan is based on characters created by author Tom Clancy in his “Ryanverse” franchise. Krasinski is the fifth actor to play Jack Ryan, joining Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck, and Chris Pine. However, Krasinski is the first to portray the character on television.

Created by Carlton Cuse and Graham Roland, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan starred Krasinski in the titular role as he goes from an analyst working behind a desk to a daring operative working in the field. Jack Ryan’s four seasons included storylines about an Islamic extremist making suspicious bank transfers, political warfare in Venezuela, nuclear bombs created by ex-Soviet Union members, and corruption within the CIA.

Premiering in August 2018, Jack Ryan ran for four seasons on Amazon Prime Video. Jack Ryan became a popular program for Prime Video, drawing 1.15 billion minutes of viewing during the week that the final two episodes of season 4 premiered.

Every second counts in new Jack Ryan season 3 trailer
John Krasinski in Jack Ryan.

It's been almost three years since the second season of Jack Ryan premiered on Amazon Prime Video. And that's far too long for life to be calm for Tom Clancy's ultimate Cold War action hero. The Jack Ryan series has updated the title character to fit in a modern context, and yet Jack just can't escape the pull of Russia. The plot of the upcoming season revolves around a plot to restore the Soviet Union to its former "glory." And can you guess whose shoulders it will fall upon to prevent that from happening? Spoiler warning: It's always going to be Jack Ryan, just like it's always going to be Russia.

Amazon Studios and MGM’s merger has been completed
Daniel Craig as James Bond in No Time to Die.

Nearly a year ago, Amazon announced plans to merge with the storied MGM studio for $8.5 billion dollars. Now, the deal has been completed, and Amazon is firmly in control of MGM's film and TV library. That's almost a century's worth of content that features over 4,000 movies, including the James Bond films, as well as a television empire that has more than 17,000 episodes.

The $8.5 billion price tag may be small compared to the $71.3 billion that Disney paid for Fox's entertainment assets in 2019. But the result and the endgame are the same. Amazon wanted MGM's titles to expand its offerings on Prime Video, which was also the primary motivation for Disney -- to use Fox's titles to beef up the selections on Disney+ and Hulu. The upcoming WarnerMedia and Discovery merger will be the next big deal in Hollywood, but it probably won't be the last.

The Residence (March 20)
The Residence | Official Trailer | Netflix
The best way to describe The Residence is that it's like Knives Out in the White House with a gender-swapped Benoit Blanc-like character. The lead is Cordelia Cupp (Uzo Aduba), an equally eccentric yet brilliant detective who consults with the local police. When the White House chief usher, A.B. Wynter (Giancarlo Esposito in a role that was originally supposed to be played by the late Andre Braugher), winds up dead, she’s called in to investigate. A state dinner is going on downstairs with officials from Australia, and Cupp orders that no one leave until she questions all 140+ people present.
The Residence is plenty of fun, mixing the usual whodunit formula with Shonda Rhimes' unique creative flair that will keep you guessing from one episode, even a moment, to the next. Aduba is perfect as Cupp, who combines an oddball personality — including repeatedly birdwatching in the middle of a murder case — with a subtle sarcasm. Through it all, however, she throws down astute observations that teach everyone she knows exactly what she’s doing, even if it doesn’t look like it. If you love the whodunit genre, The Residence won’t disappoint.

The Studio (March 26)
The Studio — Official Trailer | Apple TV+
One of Apple TV+’s quieter new show releases is The Studio, which has gotten overwhelmingly positive reception in early reviews. Seth Rogen created and stars in this comedy as Matt Remick, a man who longs to run a Hollywood studio. When he finally realizes this dream, however, the reality of the complicated balancing act of managing budgets, changing economic and societal times, corporate demands, and eccentric actors sinks in.
The Studio has an incredible cast that includes Catherine O’Hara, Ike Barinholtz, Chase Sui Wonders, and Kathryn Hahn. There's also a rotating selection of guest stars playing exaggerated versions of themselves to add to the Hollywood feel, from Zac Efron to Martin Scorsese. Early reviews already give The Studio a perfect 100% Rotten Tomatoes score, with Slant Magazine’s Ross McIndoe singling out the dark and “more than a little pointed” comedy as the highlight.
