Jared Leto covers Empire magazine as the Joker from Suicide Squad

Jared Leto got back into character as Suicide Squad‘s Joker in a new cover for Empire magazine. The December issue of the British publication boasts a rare full-length image of the chilling green-haired villain.

With how much buzz there has been about early looks at Leto’s character, the magazine picked its Suicide Squad cover well. The latest photo reveals still more tattoos, including a massive one across him abdomen that appears to say “Joker.” He’s pictured shirtless, which seems to be his preferred state of dress (or undress, as the case may be). The Joker does, however, don a version of his familiar purple coat — this time, a purple crocodile trench coat — as well as carry a cane. Shoes are apparently as unnecessary a shirts, seeing as he’s barefoot.

If The Joker looks intense, it’s nothing compared to how seriously Leto has taken the role. His Suicide Squad co-star Will Smith (Deadshot) recently said that he’s never met the actor because Leto was always in character. It’s no wonder he captures the character so well.

Suicide Squad, which is written and directed by David Ayer, features a star-studded cast, who play incarcerated villains from the DC Comics universe. The film follows the group as they jointly take on a dangerous mission for a covert government group. In addition to Leto and Smith, the movie stars Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Cara Delevingne as Enchantress, and more.

Suicide Squad is set to open in theaters on August 5, 2016.

James Gunn teases Suicide Squad, Peacemaker, and GotG projects
The cast of "The Suicide Squad" standing in a forest.

Director James Gunn may be the busiest man in comic book movies and TV shows. After finishing The Suicide Squad, Gunn jumped to that film's HBO Max spinoff, Peacemaker, and he's now shooting Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 for Marvel.  But according to Gunn himself, he may have another HBO Max Suicide Squad spinoff in his future.

“We’re working on something else now, another TV show that’s connected to that universe,” said Gunn during an interview with Deadline's Hero Nation podcast.

Jared Leto goes full vampire in vicious new Morbius preview
Morbius the Living Vampire on the ground in Morbius.

Early next year, Jared Leto is headlining Morbius, the next film in Sony Pictures' Spider-Man adjacent movie universe. And in a new Morbius preview scene, Leto's character, Dr. Michael Morbius, undergoes a startling transformation into a living vampire. As in the comics, Michael is desperately trying to cure his rare blood disease. Unfortunately, the cure may be far worse than the disease.

In the preview, Michael and his fiancée, Martine Bancroft, are prisoners on a ship and under heavy guard. Martine is also a doctor, but even she couldn't have foreseen that Michael's treatment would strip him of his humanity. Michael's transition from human to vampire looks extremely painful. But he has it easy compared to the guards after he unleashes his fangs and claws. Workman's comp probably can't cover those injuries.

The Suicide Squad’s John Cena returns in the first Peacemaker teaser
John Cena in Peacemaker.

If you have no idea who Peacemaker is supposed to be, don't worry. Even among dedicated DC Comics fans, Peacemaker wasn't exactly an A-list comic book character before writer and director James Gunn placed him in The Suicide Squad earlier this year. Gunn cast former WWE wrestler John Cena as Peacemaker, and he must have liked what he saw in Cena's performance because out of every surviving member of Task Force X, Peacemaker is the only one who is getting a spinoff series on HBO Max.

As part of this morning's HBO Max Europe preview, fans got their first look at the new Peacemaker series. It's worth mentioning that Peacemaker's real name is Christopher Smith, but there's never a moment when he isn't Peacemaker. The concept of a secret identity is foreign to Christopher, and he can't resist wearing his new Peacemaker costume out to a casual dinner with his co-workers. Fair warning: There's a lot of NSFW language in the following clip.
