More Lord of the Rings movies are coming

“Multiple” Lord of the Rings movies are in the works, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO and President David Zazlav announced Thursday during the company’s fourth-quarter 2022 earnings call.

Zazlav didn’t elaborate any further on the new slate of Lord of the Rings films, so there’s no word on timing, storyline, characters, directors, or actors.

“Warner Bros. Discovery is a storytelling company,” Zazlav said in the prepared remarks that led off the earnings call. That section was heavy on telling investors that the internal upheaval that saw the combination of Warner Bros. — which owns brands like HBO and CNN — with Discovery was over, and that the focus is now all about the content. “We believe we have the strongest hand in the industry,” he said, continuing a poker metaphor, “with the most complete portfolio of assets … across sports, news, nonfiction and entertainment.

The original Lord of the Rings films, based on the beloved J.R.R. Tolkien books, were released from 2001 to 2003 and were the brainchild of acclaimed director Peter Jackson. Those three films totaled nearly $3 billion in box-office revenue. They were followed about a decade later by The Hobbit trilogy, which brought Guillermo del Toro into the fold. Like the original LOTR films, the second trilogy also netted nearly $3 billion in revenue, but more than doubled the initial budget. They were released in December 2012, 2013, and 2014.

More recently, the LOTR franchise got a bit of a reboot with The Rings of Power, a 2022 series released on Amazon Prime Video. New Lord of the Rings films presumably also would take advantage of Warner Bros. Discovery’s position in the gaming space as well, as it’s done with the Harry Potter franchise and more recently the release of the Hogwarts Legacy video game.

Also on the earnings call, Zazlav said a media event on April 12, 2023, would shine more light on the upcoming changes to the HBO Max and Discovery+ streaming services. It’s widely believed that HBO Max — the more expensive of the two services — will gain Discovery content while keeping its more premium series and movies. But Discovery+ is no longer expected to disappear entirely.

Work is underway on 2 Lord of the Rings live-action projects, including The Hunt for Gollum
Andy Serkis gollum

Ian McKellan sent an entire fandom into excited confusion when he seemed to suggest on the British talk show The Morning that Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum was, in fact, two films. Now, Philippa Boyens, the screenwriter who worked with Peter Jackson on both of his Lord of the Rings trilogy, has clarified that The Hunt for Gollum is just one movie, but added another juicy tidbit.

“I can tell you definitively it isn’t two films!” Boyens said in an interview with Empire Magazine. “That was a genuine misunderstanding that happened because we’ve begun to work, conceptually, on two different live-action films. The first being ‘The Hunt For Gollum,’ the second one still to be confirmed.”

The Rings of Power creators respond to controversial Dark Wizard theory
The Dark Wizard holds his staff in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2.

For all the mysteries it clears up, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2 still leaves viewers with at least one major question to mull over as they await the show's return. The series' second season specifically does not reveal the identity of the mysterious villain known right now only as the Dark Wizard (Ciarán Hinds). The character's physical appearance and seeming allegiance to Sauron (Charlie Vickers) have nonetheless led many fans to theorize that he may be Saruman, the wizard famously played in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings and Hobbit films by the late, great Christopher Lee.

However, in a post-finale interview with Vanity Fair, The Rings of Power showrunners Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne seemed to shoot that particular theory down. "Given the history of Middle-earth, it would be highly, highly, highly improbable that this could be Saruman," McKay said, to which Payne added, "If not impossible."

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power just concluded its fantastic second season with an epic battle that alters the future of Middle-earth. Naturally, the finale sets up a third season. Amazon is "on the verge" of renewing The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power for a third season. Showrunners JD Payne and Patrick McKay have reportedly been preparing season 3's story even without an official renewal. Payne and McKay have reportedly established a writers' room for the third season. In February, Payne and McKay inked new three-year deals to remain with Amazon MGM Studios.
