Netflix nabs most 2016 SAG Awards nominations with a total of 10

Netflix may be relatively new to the film and TV awards circuit, but the streaming-service-turned-studio is continuing to make its presence felt. On Wednesday, nominations were announced for the 2016 Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards, and Netflix came away with 10 nods — more than any other studio.

The majority of the streamer’s nominations were for its TV content, with five original series or specials pulling in eight television nominations. Actors and casts from A Very Murray Christmas, Orange Is the New Black, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Daredevil, and House of Cards were recognized, with House of Cards accounting for three nods on its own. No show scored more than three.

Showtime’s Homeland and HBO’s Game of Thrones each tied House of Cards with their own trio of nominations, but no network was able to equal Netflix’s total. While HBO offered up serious competition at the Emmys this year, its six nominations fall short of the streaming service’s eight. Showtime came in with the third most in television, landing five nods. Both HBO and Showtime’s nominations came from three series apiece.

As far as rival streamers go, Netflix was well ahead of the curve. Hulu wasn’t nominated at all, and only one Amazon show made the cut: Transparent. The comedy series did, however, get nominated in two categories and has proven formidable at previous awards shows.

On the film front, Netflix didn’t lead the pack — that honor would go to box office giant Universal Studios — but it did score a respectable two nominations for its first original movie, Beasts of No Nation. One nod came for the film’s cast, while the other acknowledged actor Idris Elba’s performance in a supporting role.

SAG Award winners will be determined after the voting by SAG members ends on January 29. The winners will be announced during the live awards ceremony airing on January 30 on TNT and TBS.

Netflix’s most popular movie right now is this obscure Russell Crowe revenge flick
A man lights a match in his car in Unhinged.

Among the many mysteries of the world, few are more profound or significant than the question of why a particular movie or TV show is at the top of the Netflix chart on any given day. Some of the movies that get to that spot make sense, but others can be head-scratchers, at least at first blush.

Unhinged is one such title that has been dominant on the Netflix charts recently, and while it may seem like a pretty random movie, there are some important reasons for its appeal. The movie tells the simple story of a woman who honks at another car in rush hour traffic, only to discover that the man behind the wheel of the other car is now tailing her, and has hatched a plan for revenge. Here are three reasons you should check it out.

The 10 most popular shows on (HBO) Max right now
Patrick Ball stands next to Noah Wyle in The Pitt.

Something is interesting among the 10 most popular shows on (HBO) Max right now. Sure, the prerequisite trashy reality TV shows from Warner Bros. Discovery are there as always. But the final two slots on this month's list belong to a TV-MA action series called Banshee and The West Wing, a political drama celebrating its 25th anniversary. The former was actually a Cinemax original series that was one of the few to stand out from that time, and it may have a larger audience on Max than it ever did on its home channel.
Additionally, there's a new No. 1 on top of the list. And it shouldn't be surprising at all to learn that it's The Pitt, the most prominent original drama currently running on Max. The reality shows may take up a few slots on this list, but a well-made HBO or Max original almost always rises to the top.

Keep reading for our complete countdown of the 10 most popular shows on Max as of January 23.

Additionally, the NBA will introduce a new 10-part docuseries, Starting 5, which chronicles the 2023-2024 season.

Enough about television; let's focus on movies -- not the top titles, but the ones that can get lost within the Netflix vault. Below are five movies that will not be on this week's most popular list. However, they all might be considered underrated, depending on your preference. Our picks include a dystopian thriller, a teen romance, and a raunchy animated comedy.
