Star Trek: Strange New Worlds trailer embraces the unknown

The opening credits of the original Star Trek promised a journey that would “explore strange new worlds. To seek out new life and new civilizations. To boldly go where no man has gone before!” However, there are only so many times that we can see Klingons, Vulcans, or Romulans before they just aren’t “new” anymore. Later this year, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is rolling back the clock to the earliest days of the Enterprise. And from here, the sky is the limit in terms of races and worlds we’ve never seen before.

Only hardcore Trekkies remember that Captain Kirk and his crew weren’t the original main characters of Star Trek. A single pilot episode, “The Cage,” was produced with Captain Pike, Number One, and a young Spock. Pike and Number One would have remained in obscurity if they hadn’t resurfaced in Star Trek: Discovery season 2. They, along with Spock, will be back for Strange New Worlds. In the first teaser trailer, Pike rediscovers his sense of purpose.

Anson Mount is reprising his role of Christopher Pike from Discovery season 2 alongside Rebecca Romijn as Una Chin-Riley/Number One, and Ethan Peck as Spock. Surprisingly, two of the characters from Kirk’s Enterprise will also have roles in the series. Celia Rose Gooding will portray Nyota Uhura, while Jess Bush steps into the part of nurse Christine Chapel.

10 best Star Trek: Discovery episodes, ranked
The cast of Star Trek: Discovery.

Of all the completed Star Trek series, Discovery may be the most difficult from which to pick out the 10 best episodes. That’s not because it’s the weakest series in the franchise like Enterprise is -- by our reckoning, it’s actually in the low middle -- but because its serialized format makes it tricky to isolate specific chapters to celebrate.
Each season of Discovery followed Michael Burnham and the crew of the show’s eponymous starship on a lengthy adventure with cosmic stakes, but not every hour packed a memorable punch. Still, while many of the chapters tend to blur together, there are some definite standouts spread evenly throughout the show’s entire five-season run.
Ready? Let’s fly.

10. “Coming Home” (season 4, episode 13)
The finale of Discovery’s fourth season is an example of everything that’s great about the series, but also everything that’s lame about it. The Federation’s climactic confrontation with the extragalactic Species 10-C is visually splendid, emotionally intense, and ultimately a story about communication and empathy, the cornerstone of Star Trek’s ethos. Sonequa Martin-Green delivers one of the best performances in the entire franchise, as her character swallows her shock and grief at her partner’s apparent death and steadies herself for duty.
But, by the end of the episode, everything has worked out swimmingly, there are hugs and smiles and no lasting consequences. Popular progressive lawmaker Stacey Abrams makes a cameo as the President of Earth to congratulate the show’s producers Captain Burnham on her inspirational work. That’s Discovery for you -- sometimes amazing, sometimes cringe, often at the same time.

MCU star Jeremy Renner returns in first trailer for Mayor of Kingstown season 3
Jeremy Renner in Mayor of Kingston season 3.

On January 1, 2023, Jeremy Renner was badly wounded when his snowplow crushed him. Renner's injuries, including almost 40 broken bones, were so severe that it was miraculous he survived, much less recovered. But now, 16 months later, Renner's comeback begins in the first trailer for the third season of his Paramount+ original series, Mayor of Kingstown.

It's unclear if the show plans to explain any physical limitations that Renner's character, Mike McLusky, may have after Renner's real-life accident. Yet there are a few scenes in the trailer where Mike appears to be getting into some fights. But the real battles ahead are the ones that not even Mike can win with his fists.
