Starz Play now live on Roku Platform

Starz announced today that Starz Play has launched on the entire Roku platform, meaning Starz Premium subscribers who also own a Roku set-top box (1, 2, or 3), Roku TV model, or a Roku Stick can drop all work-related pursuits and start binge-streaming the channel’s content today — you’re welcome, bosses of America. Roku users will now have access to Starz original series, movies, and first-run films through the Starz Play app, which can be found in the Movies & TV category within the Roku Channel Store.

Original series like Blunt Talk, Survivor’s Remorse, and Outlander headline the app’s small screen offerings, while first-run films like Big Hero 6, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Fury, Annie, Maleficent, Into the Woods, The Equalizer, Muppets Most Wanted, and The Wedding Ringer are the stars (bad pun intended) in the movie department.

“Starz is pleased to launch Starz Play on Roku devices, expanding the reach of Starz Play to millions of Roku customers,” said Scott Barton, senior vice president of branded digital content and products for Starz. “The Roku platform is a significant addition for our TV Everywhere service and we’re proud to give subscribers another option to watch our critically acclaimed Starz Original series and premium movies.”

Starz Play is already available on a host of connected devices, including iPhone, iPad, many Android handsets and tablets, Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Chromecast, and plenty of others. If you’re one of the many people who already had access to the app, this isn’t huge news but as far as we’re concerned, the more streaming options the better.

Starz Play is available free to Starz Premium subscribers and allows customers to access content from any supported connected screen, whether at home or on-the-go.

Roku 3 typically retails for around $99, while the company’s standard Streaming Stick will set you back around $40.

A newer, faster Roku Ultra rolls out for 2024
The 2024 Roku Ultra.

There aren't many devices that have a through line going back nearly a decade. But the Roku Ultra is one of them. And eight years after its debut (its lineage really goes back much farther than that, though), we have a new Roku Ultra for 2024, some three years after its last update.

On paper, this appears to be a fairly typical Roku rollout, with the workhorse streaming device seeing iterative updates across the board. Faster processor. Faster app launches. Better wireless networking. Improved remote control. And improved compatibility with Roku's own budding smart home accessories lineup.

Elon Musk’s X TV is now available in your living room
The X TV app on LG smart TVs.

If what's been missing from your life is a video-centric app from a platform that still considers itself to be the world's town square, is run at the whims of an (ahem) extremely eccentric billionaire, and that has in many ways given up on any semblance of moderation that would make it the sort of place you'd want to admit hanging out, welcome to X TV.

The app is now live on the various app stores — we've found it on Google Play, LG's app store, and the Amazon App Store (searching for it on Apple TV only returned the legacy Twitter app as I write this). There are different release dates depending on which platform you're looking at. Amazon shows it as having been live since late July, but LG's app store says August 29, 2024.

You can now buy Victrola’s repeat-play automatic turntable
Victrola VPT-800 Automatic Turntable.

Automatic turntables are hardly a new idea, and there are several companies that make them. Bluetooth turntables are also pretty common these days. But an automatic turntable with Bluetooth that can also play the same side of a record as often as you want, without lifting a finger? That's a rare combo indeed, and one that Victrola showed off at CES 2024 in it VPT-800 Automatic Turntable.

At the show, Victrola said the Automatic Turntable would be available for a very accessible $200, and now it has made good on that promise. You can buy it online at tons of retailers including victrola.com, Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy, and Target, plus lots of bricks and mortar stores.
