Is the 2023 live-action The Little Mermaid remake streaming?

In 1989, The Little Mermaid marked the beginning of the Disney Renaissance, which revitalized the company’s animation division and eventually led to Disney’s emergence as the biggest studio in Hollywood. During the intervening decades, Disney has made a habit out of remaking its animated classics in live-action. Some are more successful than others, but The Little Mermaid has a special place in our hearts thanks to the timeless music and songs of Alan Menken and the late Howard Ashman.

For the remake, Hamilton star and creator Lin-Manuel Miranda joined Menken for some new songs and a few revamped numbers. Additionally, singer and actress Halle Bailey stepped into the title role of Ariel, who was voiced by Jodi Benson in the original film. Rounding out the cast of the remake are Jonah Hauer-King, Daveed Diggs, Renfield‘s Awkwafina, Jacob Tremblay, Noma Dumezweni, Art Malik, Javier Bardem, and Melissa McCarthy.

Is The Little Mermaid (2023) streaming?

Walt Disney Studios

No, not yet. At the time of this post, The Little Mermaid has been in theaters for almost two weeks. And while the film has struggled overseas, it’s a domestic hit with $197.6 million to date in North America. As long as it’s making that kind of money, Disney won’t be in a hurry to stream it.

Will you be able to watch The Little Mermaid at home?

Disney

Absolutely, yes you will. The only question is when. While Disney+ initially received films as soon as 30 to 45 days after their theatrical debut, the company has considerably slowed down the pace for movies that reach blockbuster status. For example, Avatar: The Way of Water took over six months to go to streaming. The Little Mermaid will almost certainly arrive this fall on Disney+, with a streaming premiere date to be announced.

Is the original Little Mermaid streaming on Disney+?

Buena Vista Pictures Distribution

Yes, Disney+ is the streaming home for not only the original Little Mermaid, but also for its two animated sequels and The Little Mermaid animated series that ran for three seasons. So there’s no shortage of Ariel on Disney+, and you can revisit the classics before the remake arrives later this year.

If you have to watch one Disney+ movie in June 2024, stream this one
George Clooney in Tomorrowland.

Right now, Disney+ is kind of like the kid in school who lets his older brother do all of his homework for him. In this analogy, Hulu is the older brother, because it's bringing most of the movies to Disney+, which gets to take all of the credit. But this month, there's a movie that's finally returned to Disney+ after inexplicably spending years in limbo. Now that Tomorrowland is back, we're officially naming it the one Disney+ movie you have to watch in June 2024. And after its quick exit the last time it was on Disney+, we can't guarantee that the film will be sticking around for long.

Tomorrowland was co-written and directed by Brad Bird, who made his name in animation with The Incredibles, Ratatouille, and The Iron Giant. It was also one of Disney's attempts to turn one of its theme park attractions into a blockbuster franchise. So far, that trick has only ever worked for the Pirates of the Caribbean films.

If you have to watch one Disney+ movie this May, stream this one
A mermaid sits in a bathtub in Aquamarine.

Disney+ subscribers have almost certainly noticed by now that this month's selection of new movies is abysmal if you don't also have a Hulu subscription. While Disney CEO Bob Iger recently crowed to investors that Disney+ is now profitable, he neglected to mention that the streamer only achieved that status because the programming has been severely cut. Unless you really love documentaries about The Beatles, Queen, The Beach Boys, or Jim Henson, there are literally no other new movies on Disney+ in May beyond the offerings from Hulu.

Because of the Hulu integration, it's now even harder to find a movie on Disney+ (outside of the major Disney brands) that you can actually watch with the original subscription that you paid for. That's something Disney+ subscribers should be very upset about. But even with these misguided content decisions, if you have to watch one Disney+ movie this May, then the film to stream is a 2006 romantic comedy/fantasy called Aquamarine, which is based on the book by Alice Hoffman. It's not actually a Disney film, but fans of The Little Mermaid may recognize certain aspects of the plot. If you're looking for reasons to watch Aquamarine, we've got a few to share.

If you have to watch one Disney+ movie this April, stream this one
An imagined underwater alien civilization in Aliens of the Deep.

It would be understandable if Disney+ subscribers feel a little jealous of Hulu in April. That's because the new additions to Hulu include The Big Lebowski, The Fifth Element, Hellboy, Ocean's 11, Jumanji: The Next Level, and even Wonder Woman. The only major Disney+ movie to debut in April was Wish. For families with kids or animation lovers, Wish might be enough. But when picking the one movie to watch on Disney+ in April, we decided to dive a little deeper into the streaming catalog. That's how we settled on our choice for the one Disney+ movie that you have to watch this month: Aliens of the Deep.

Between the premiere of Titanic in 1997 and Avatar in 2009, director James Cameron threw himself into the realm of underwater exploration and directed or co-directed two documentary films. Cameron's first documentary, Ghosts of the Abyss, is not on Disney+. But Aliens of the Deep has a permanent home here. This movie was originally an IMAX release and it was filmed in IMAX 3D. The streaming experience may not be able to replicate that, but Aliens of the Deep is still visually dazzling even in 2D. And now, we'll share the three reasons why you should watch Aliens of the Deep this month.
