3 action movies on Hulu you need to watch in September 2024

A man prepares to fight in Boy Kills World.
Lionsgate

Action fans are rarely out of options on Hulu. Thanks to Hulu’s less stringent approach to R-rated movies, it has a lot more options than the safe PG-13 flicks that populate Disney+. Hulu is also home to the vast film library of 20th Century Studios, which means that some storied franchises have a streaming service of their own.

Our picks for the three action movies on Hulu that you need to watch in September include a recent release that’s making its streaming premiere, an underappreciated sequel, and a jaw-dropping sci-fi/action story that was one of the best films of the decade.

Boy Kills World (2024)

Bill Skarsgård in Boy Kills World.
Lionsgate

Bill Skarsgård may be coming off a lackluster remake of The Crow, but it wasn’t his only revenge epic in 2024. In Boy Kills World, Skarsgård plays… Boy! In a dystopian future, Boy’s family was murdered by the evil Van Der Koy family, led by its matriarch, Hilda (Famke Janssen).

Boy survives the attack, but is left deaf and unable to speak. Archer‘s H. Jon Benjamin provides the inner voice of Boy that he took from a video game, and he narrates the movie while attempting to bring down the entire Van Der Koy family.

Die Hard 2 (1990)

Bruce Willis grimaces in the night snow in Die Hard 2.
20th Century Fox / 20th Century Studios

Like the swallows to Capistrano, the Die Hard movies have migrated back on Hulu. And action films rarely get better than the first three in that franchise. Because we’ll have plenty of time to write about Die Hard this Christmas, and also because Die Hard with a Vengeance is more of a summer movie, we’re throwing the spotlight on Die Hard 2, an underrated Christmas film in its own right.

Picture this: It’s two years after the original movie and not even John McClane (Bruce Willis) can believe that this [bleep] is happening to him again. John is just trying to meet his wife at the airport in Washington D.C. when her flight and several others are endangered by a terrorist takeover of the air traffic control system. John can’t take that lying down, even if he has a really tough time convincing the other cops to take the threat seriously.

Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes (2014)

Caesar leading his army of apes in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.
20th Century Studios

The Batman‘s Matt Reeves did a masterful job with the second installment of his Planet of the Apes reboot. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is a terrific action movie, even though the theme of the film is about trying to prevent a war between humanity and the apes. Caesar (Andy Serkis) doesn’t really trust men anymore, but he reluctantly forms a bond with Malcolm (Jason Clarke) and his wife, Ellie (Keri Russell), that could reconcile the two sides.

Unfortunately for Caesar, one of his followers, Koba (Toby Kebbell), will do anything to ignite a war with humanity… even if it means that he has to kill Caesar to light that spark. The future of apes and humans alike hangs in the balance, and there won’t be any winners in this conflict.

3 underrated movies on Hulu you need to watch in February 2025
Kristin Stewart in the 2020 film Underwater

Hulu's movie selection for February combines prestige plays with blockbuster success. The Oscar-nominated A Real Pain is heavily featured on the streamer. Jesse Eisenberg's road-trip dramedy received two Academy Award nominations, including Best Supporting Actor for Kieran Culkin. Elsewhere, the biggest blockbuster on Hulu's homepage is Alien: Romulus, the latest terrifying chapter in the Alien franchise.
A Real Pain and Alien: Romulus will certainly be seen by many subscribers. However, there are numerous movies to watch that can be found on the genre pages. If you scroll carefully, you'll find a few diamonds in the rough. To save you time, here are three underrated movies to watch right now. Our picks include a quick thriller, an alien-in-the-ocean horror, and a raunchy comedy.
We also have guides to the best new movies to stream, the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on Max, and the best movies on Disney+.
Underwater (2020)
Underwater | Official Trailer [HD] | 20th Century FOX
Underwater channels Ridley Scott's Alien, posing the question: What if the creature were beneath the surface? Directed by William Eubank, Underwater follows a group of employees at a research and drilling facility at the bottom of the Mariana Trench. Part of the facility is destroyed during an underwater earthquake.
With no escape pods left, the group — including Norah Price (Kristen Stewart), Captain Lucien (Vincent Cassel), and Paul Abel (T.J. Miller) — decides that their only chance of survival is to walk to another research base one mile across the ocean floor. Big mistake because unknown creatures terrorize the crew upon their every movement. Like Alien, the team must get creative to survive or risk a painful death.

Phone Booth (2002)

Colin Farrell is in the midst of a career-defining run thanks to his Oscar-nominated role in The Banshees of Inisherin and his Golden Globe-winning turn as Oz Cobb in The Penguin. Farrell's always done good work throughout his three-decade run. Phone Booth is a case in point for Farrell's early work. Farrell stars as Stu Shepard, a sleazy New York City publicist who has been unfaithful to his wife Kelly (Radha Mitchell).
While in Times Square, Stu enters a phone booth to call his mistress. A mysterious man (Kiefer Sutherland) calls the booth and forces Stu to remain inside the phone booth. Stu doesn't take this threat seriously. However, this is no laughing matter. The man holds Stu at gunpoint and tells him to obey the rules or face the consequences. Phone Booth is a brisk 81-minute nail-biter with a good cat-and-mouse dynamic between Farrell and Sutherland.

Dirty Grandpa (2016)
Dirty Grandpa (2016 Movie - Zac Efron, Robert De Niro) Official Trailer – “Get Dirty”
It's OK to laugh at stupid humor. There is a lot of lewdness, raunchiness, and stupidity in Dirty Grandpa. Not everything has to be Citizen Kane. Sometimes, watching Zac Efron and Robert De Niro embark on a hijinks-fueled road trip will suffice. Jason Kelly (Efron) is a high-strung Alabama lawyer who will soon marry his boss's Type A daughter (Julianne Hough) in one week.
Before Jason walks down the aisle, he must drive his grandfather, Richard "Dick" Kelly (De Niro), to Boca Raton, Florida. While on the road trip, Dick tricks Jason into driving them to spring break in Daytona Beach, Florida. While Dick wants to party with booze and women, Jason cannot stop thinking about his future and refuses to relax. That's where Grandpa comes in, who shows his grandson how to let loose and have a good time.

3 underrated (HBO) Max movies you should watch this weekend (February 7-9)
A group of young adults walk on the grass in Final Destination 2.

This weekend is one of the few cases where the arts take a backseat to sports. Super Bowl LIX will be played on Sunday, February 9. The Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles will play for the right to call themselves champions. Over 115 million viewers are expected to watch Super Bowl LIX. More people will watch when you consider that the Big Game draws big crowds around one television.

The Super Bowl is Sunday night at 6:30 p.m. ET. Until then, what should you watch? Max has an excellent lineup of prestige dramas, hilarious comedies, action thrillers, and frightening horrors. While the Max homepage is a great resource, many movies are hidden within each genre. The three movies below represent under-the-radar picks that can be equally as satisfying as the noteworthy titles.

3 great Hulu movies you need to stream this weekend (February 7-9)
Denzel Washington in He Got Game.

When picking selections for the weekend ahead, we don't tend to do so by year. But by a fluke of the February release schedule, all of our selections for the three great Hulu movies that you need to stream this weekend were released in theaters in 1998. And they couldn't be more different from each other.
Our first selection is a powerful father-and-son drama from director Spike Lee, while the second features one of Oprah Winfrey's performances. The final selection is a classic comedy that caused quite a stir when it was originally released, but it may seem relatively tame nearly three decades later.
Need more recommendations? We also have guides to the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on Max, and the best movies on Disney+.
He Got Game (1998)

Spike Lee's He Got Game is a basketball fable that allowed NBA player Ray Allen to give the performance of a lifetime as Jesus Shuttlesworth, one of the top high school basketball prospects in the country. Colleges are so eager to sign Jesus that the governor of New York briefly releases his estranged father, Jake Shuttlesworth (Denzel Washington), from prison just to convince Jesus to attend the governor's alma mater.
