3 great Hulu movies you need to stream this weekend (January 31-February 2)

Jesse Eisenberg in The Art of Self-Defense.
Bleecker Street

This weekend is one of the rare occasions when the start of the month falls on a Saturday. That means a fresh lineup of films will be available to Hulu fans on Saturday, February 1. So rather than rehashing January’s releases, all three of our picks for the great Hulu movies you need to stream this weekend are going live on the streamer on Saturday. So make your viewing plans accordingly.

Our choices include a fan-favorite Quentin Tarantino action film, a hilariously dark comedy, and an incredibly charming sports rom-com that still holds up over two decades later.

Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003)

Uma Thurman as The Bride wielding her katana in Kill Bill Vol. 1.
Miramax Films

Quentin Tarantino sure doesn’t seem to be in a very big hurry to direct his final film, but two of his best movies are on Hulu in January. Kill Bill Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 are essentially the same film cut into two parts. Yet if we’re judging them on an individual basis, the first one is superior. Uma Thurman stars as the Bride — her real name doesn’t come up until the second film — and she has a real bone to pick with her former lover, Bill (David Carradine). On the day of her wedding, Bill sent the Bride’s former teammates in the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad to murder her and everyone in her wedding party.

Years later, the Bride awakens from her coma with a desire for revenge. And the first two names on her hit list are Vernita Green (Vivica A. Fox) and O-Ren Ishii (Lucy Liu). Even if the Bride can get past these two, she still has to get past Elle Driver (Daryl Hannah) and Budd (Michael Madsen) before she can confront Bill. Tarantino lets the story unfold in a non-linear fashion, and somehow it plays even better that way.

The Art of Self-Defense (2019)

Jesse Eisenberg as Casey Davies in The Art of Self-Defense.
Bleecker Street

Jesse Eisenberg’s A Real Pain is currently streaming on Hulu, but fans of dark comedy may prefer one of his earlier roles in The Art of Self-Defense. Eisenberg plays Casey Davies, a man who feels emasculated and afraid after being attacked by a gang. Casey decides to toughen himself up by joining a dojo run by Sensei (Alessandro Nivola).

Under Sensei’s tutelage, Casey thinks he’s turning into the Karate Kid. In reality, Sensei is teaching him all of the wrong lessons about being a man and a martial artist while holding down the one woman in the dojo, Anna (Davies Imogen), despite her superior skills. By the time Casey realizes what’s happening, he’s in too deep, and Sensei won’t let him walk away from the dojo.

Bend It Like Beckham (2003)

Parminder Nagra and Keira Knightley in Bend It Like Beckham.
Searchlight Pictures

Bend it Like Beckham was Keira Knightley’s breakout film 22 years ago, but it was actually a starring vehicle for Parminder Nagra. The story follows Jess Bhamra (Nagra), the daughter of Punjabi Sikh parents living in England who don’t approve of her desire to play soccer. Regardless, Jules Paxton (Knightley) recruits Jess to join a local team, and the pair form a strong friendship.

Jess feels the pressure of keeping her activities a secret, even as she helps her family prepare for the marriage of her sister, Pinky (Archie Panjabi). Jess’ bond with Jules is threatened when both young women develop romantic feelings for their coach, Joe (Jonathan Rhys Meyers).

3 underrated movies on Hulu you need to watch in February 2025
Kristin Stewart in the 2020 film Underwater

Hulu's movie selection for February combines prestige plays with blockbuster success. The Oscar-nominated A Real Pain is heavily featured on the streamer. Jesse Eisenberg's road-trip dramedy received two Academy Award nominations, including Best Supporting Actor for Kieran Culkin. Elsewhere, the biggest blockbuster on Hulu's homepage is Alien: Romulus, the latest terrifying chapter in the Alien franchise.
A Real Pain and Alien: Romulus will certainly be seen by many subscribers. However, there are numerous movies to watch that can be found on the genre pages. If you scroll carefully, you'll find a few diamonds in the rough. To save you time, here are three underrated movies to watch right now. Our picks include a quick thriller, an alien-in-the-ocean horror, and a raunchy comedy.

Underwater (2020)
Underwater | Official Trailer [HD] | 20th Century FOX
Underwater channels Ridley Scott's Alien, posing the question: What if the creature were beneath the surface? Directed by William Eubank, Underwater follows a group of employees at a research and drilling facility at the bottom of the Mariana Trench. Part of the facility is destroyed during an underwater earthquake.
With no escape pods left, the group — including Norah Price (Kristen Stewart), Captain Lucien (Vincent Cassel), and Paul Abel (T.J. Miller) — decides that their only chance of survival is to walk to another research base one mile across the ocean floor. Big mistake because unknown creatures terrorize the crew upon their every movement. Like Alien, the team must get creative to survive or risk a painful death.

Phone Booth (2002)

Colin Farrell is in the midst of a career-defining run thanks to his Oscar-nominated role in The Banshees of Inisherin and his Golden Globe-winning turn as Oz Cobb in The Penguin. Farrell's always done good work throughout his three-decade run. Phone Booth is a case in point for Farrell's early work. Farrell stars as Stu Shepard, a sleazy New York City publicist who has been unfaithful to his wife Kelly (Radha Mitchell).
While in Times Square, Stu enters a phone booth to call his mistress. A mysterious man (Kiefer Sutherland) calls the booth and forces Stu to remain inside the phone booth. Stu doesn't take this threat seriously. However, this is no laughing matter. The man holds Stu at gunpoint and tells him to obey the rules or face the consequences. Phone Booth is a brisk 81-minute nail-biter with a good cat-and-mouse dynamic between Farrell and Sutherland.

Dirty Grandpa (2016)
Dirty Grandpa (2016 Movie - Zac Efron, Robert De Niro) Official Trailer – “Get Dirty”
It's OK to laugh at stupid humor. There is a lot of lewdness, raunchiness, and stupidity in Dirty Grandpa. Not everything has to be Citizen Kane. Sometimes, watching Zac Efron and Robert De Niro embark on a hijinks-fueled road trip will suffice. Jason Kelly (Efron) is a high-strung Alabama lawyer who will soon marry his boss's Type A daughter (Julianne Hough) in one week.
Before Jason walks down the aisle, he must drive his grandfather, Richard "Dick" Kelly (De Niro), to Boca Raton, Florida. While on the road trip, Dick tricks Jason into driving them to spring break in Daytona Beach, Florida. While Dick wants to party with booze and women, Jason cannot stop thinking about his future and refuses to relax. That's where Grandpa comes in, who shows his grandson how to let loose and have a good time.

3 great Hulu movies you need to stream this weekend (February 7-9)
Denzel Washington in He Got Game.

When picking selections for the weekend ahead, we don't tend to do so by year. But by a fluke of the February release schedule, all of our selections for the three great Hulu movies that you need to stream this weekend were released in theaters in 1998. And they couldn't be more different from each other.
Our first selection is a powerful father-and-son drama from director Spike Lee, while the second features one of Oprah Winfrey's performances. The final selection is a classic comedy that caused quite a stir when it was originally released, but it may seem relatively tame nearly three decades later.

A group of football players stand with their coach.

This weekend welcomes one of the year's biggest sporting events, the Super Bowl. The Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles will play in Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans, Louisiana. The game is a rematch of Super Bowl LVII, which saw the Chiefs defeat the Eagles by a score of 38-35. This time, the Eagles will try to avenge their loss and prevent the Chiefs from winning three consecutive Super Bowls.
The Super Bowl is typically the most-watched TV event of the calendar year. Even if you don't like football, many consumers tune in for the entertaining commercials. To get ready for the game, FAST services have a wide selection of football movies to stream for free. Our recommendations include a comedy about a team of replacements, a 1990s comedy, and an underdog story.

The Replacements (2000)

Everyone likes a good redemption story. For the players in The Replacements, this is their shot at becoming football heroes. Due to a players' strike, the Washington Sentinels are left without a team. The Sentinels must win three of their final four games to make the postseason. Sentinels owner Edward O'Neil (Jack Warden) hires former coach Jimmy McGinty (Gene Hackman) to lead a team of replacement players for the rest of the season.
McGinty accepts the deal and forms the team his way. The centerpiece of the new squad is quarterback Shane Falco (Keanu Reeves), a former All-American whose career went downhill after choking in a big game. With Falco as the leader, McGinty fills in the rest of the squad with rejects and no-names. However, the team eventually comes together and bonds over their shared disappointments. Who knows? Maybe a team of bench guys can become legends.
