The Avenue

October hasn’t hit its midpoint yet, but Hulu is still bringing out some top-tier movies to stream. And while a lot of this month’s Hulu film selections are horror-related for Halloween, there are some new additions that fall outside of that genre. That includes the newly released crime action thriller Blood for Dust, which is  among our picks for the three great Hulu movies that you need to stream this weekend.

Our other choices this week include a horror remake of an ’80s classic, as well as a romantic comedy/drama that is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.

Blood for Dust (2024)

Kit Harington in Blood for Dust.
The Avenue

Game of Thrones actor Kit Harington really plays against type in Blood for Dust. In this film, Harington’s character, Ricky, is anything but heroic. He’s the guy who gives Cliff (Scoot McNairy) a lifeline when his employment prospects are dim. Cliff made his own mistakes on his way down from the life he created for himself, and he makes an even bigger error by accepting Ricky’s offer to help him smuggle guns and drugs.

Cliff took Ricky at his word, and that might be his final mistake. That’s because Ricky has no qualms about stealing from his partners or leaving a pile of dead bodies in his wake. Now, Cliff may be the only thing standing between Ricky and a substantial payday. It’s just a question of which one of them is going to catch a bullet or two.

Fright Night (2011)

Imogen Poots in Fright Night.
Walt Disney Studios

“Welcome to Fright Night.” While the 1985 original version of Fright Night is arguably better than the 2011 remake, we have to work with what we have on the streamers. The remake definitely had a stellar cast, including The Penguin‘s Colin Farrell, ex-Doctor Who star David Tennant, and the late Anton Yelchin in the lead as Charley Brewster. Charley’s best friend, Edward “Evil Ed” Lee (Christopher Mintz-Plasse), is convinced that their new neighbor, Jerry (Farrell), is secretly a vampire. But Charley dismisses him out of hand.

When Evil Ed goes missing, Charley starts to realize that his friend was right and Jerry is preying upon the neighborhood. Desperate for help, Charley turns to a so-called vampire expert Peter Vincent (Tennant). However, Peter wants nothing to do with real vampires, which may leave Charley with no one left to turn to if he wants to save his girlfriend, Amy Peterson (Imogen Poots), and the rest of Jerry’s victims.

Sideways (2004)

The cast of Sideways.
Searchlight Pictures

Paul Giamatti and Thomas Haden Church have a wild road trip in Sideways, which takes their characters through California’s wine country. Jack Cole ( Church) is an actor who is finally getting married, while his pal, Miles Raymond (Giamatti), is a struggling writer who can’t get his manuscript published. Miles just wants to use the pre-wedding trip to relax, but all Jack cares about is finding a woman to hook up with.

Jack gets his wish with Stephanie (Sandra Oh), a woman he meets at a wine-tasting event. Even Miles finds a potential romance with a waitress, Maya Randall (Virginia Madsen). Miles isn’t as fast as his friend is at wooing women, but he might have something genuine with Maya … if Jack’s lie about being single doesn’t come back to haunt both of them.

3 underrated movies on Hulu you need to watch in February 2025
Kristin Stewart in the 2020 film Underwater

Hulu's movie selection for February combines prestige plays with blockbuster success. The Oscar-nominated A Real Pain is heavily featured on the streamer. Jesse Eisenberg's road-trip dramedy received two Academy Award nominations, including Best Supporting Actor for Kieran Culkin. Elsewhere, the biggest blockbuster on Hulu's homepage is Alien: Romulus, the latest terrifying chapter in the Alien franchise.
A Real Pain and Alien: Romulus will certainly be seen by many subscribers. However, there are numerous movies to watch that can be found on the genre pages. If you scroll carefully, you'll find a few diamonds in the rough. To save you time, here are three underrated movies to watch right now. Our picks include a quick thriller, an alien-in-the-ocean horror, and a raunchy comedy.

Underwater (2020)
Underwater | Official Trailer [HD] | 20th Century FOX
Underwater channels Ridley Scott's Alien, posing the question: What if the creature were beneath the surface? Directed by William Eubank, Underwater follows a group of employees at a research and drilling facility at the bottom of the Mariana Trench. Part of the facility is destroyed during an underwater earthquake.
With no escape pods left, the group — including Norah Price (Kristen Stewart), Captain Lucien (Vincent Cassel), and Paul Abel (T.J. Miller) — decides that their only chance of survival is to walk to another research base one mile across the ocean floor. Big mistake because unknown creatures terrorize the crew upon their every movement. Like Alien, the team must get creative to survive or risk a painful death.

Phone Booth (2002)

Colin Farrell is in the midst of a career-defining run thanks to his Oscar-nominated role in The Banshees of Inisherin and his Golden Globe-winning turn as Oz Cobb in The Penguin. Farrell's always done good work throughout his three-decade run. Phone Booth is a case in point for Farrell's early work. Farrell stars as Stu Shepard, a sleazy New York City publicist who has been unfaithful to his wife Kelly (Radha Mitchell).
While in Times Square, Stu enters a phone booth to call his mistress. A mysterious man (Kiefer Sutherland) calls the booth and forces Stu to remain inside the phone booth. Stu doesn't take this threat seriously. However, this is no laughing matter. The man holds Stu at gunpoint and tells him to obey the rules or face the consequences. Phone Booth is a brisk 81-minute nail-biter with a good cat-and-mouse dynamic between Farrell and Sutherland.

Dirty Grandpa (2016)
Dirty Grandpa (2016 Movie - Zac Efron, Robert De Niro) Official Trailer – “Get Dirty”
It's OK to laugh at stupid humor. There is a lot of lewdness, raunchiness, and stupidity in Dirty Grandpa. Not everything has to be Citizen Kane. Sometimes, watching Zac Efron and Robert De Niro embark on a hijinks-fueled road trip will suffice. Jason Kelly (Efron) is a high-strung Alabama lawyer who will soon marry his boss's Type A daughter (Julianne Hough) in one week.
Before Jason walks down the aisle, he must drive his grandfather, Richard "Dick" Kelly (De Niro), to Boca Raton, Florida. While on the road trip, Dick tricks Jason into driving them to spring break in Daytona Beach, Florida. While Dick wants to party with booze and women, Jason cannot stop thinking about his future and refuses to relax. That's where Grandpa comes in, who shows his grandson how to let loose and have a good time.

3 great Hulu movies you need to stream this weekend (February 7-9)
Denzel Washington in He Got Game.

When picking selections for the weekend ahead, we don't tend to do so by year. But by a fluke of the February release schedule, all of our selections for the three great Hulu movies that you need to stream this weekend were released in theaters in 1998. And they couldn't be more different from each other.
Our first selection is a powerful father-and-son drama from director Spike Lee, while the second features one of Oprah Winfrey's performances. The final selection is a classic comedy that caused quite a stir when it was originally released, but it may seem relatively tame nearly three decades later.

He Got Game (1998)

Colleges are so eager to sign Jesus that the governor of New York briefly releases his estranged father, Jake Shuttlesworth (Denzel Washington), from prison just to convince Jesus to attend the governor's alma mater.

3 great free movies to stream this weekend (February 7-9)
A group of football players stand with their coach.

This weekend welcomes one of the year's biggest sporting events, the Super Bowl. The Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles will play in Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans, Louisiana. The game is a rematch of Super Bowl LVII, which saw the Chiefs defeat the Eagles by a score of 38-35. This time, the Eagles will try to avenge their loss and prevent the Chiefs from winning three consecutive Super Bowls.
The Super Bowl is typically the most-watched TV event of the calendar year. Even if you don't like football, many consumers tune in for the entertaining commercials. To get ready for the game, FAST services have a wide selection of football movies to stream for free. Our recommendations include a comedy about a team of replacements, a 1990s comedy, and an underdog story.

The Replacements (2000)

Everyone likes a good redemption story. For the players in The Replacements, this is their shot at becoming football heroes. Due to a players' strike, the Washington Sentinels are left without a team. The Sentinels must win three of their final four games to make the postseason. Sentinels owner Edward O'Neil (Jack Warden) hires former coach Jimmy McGinty (Gene Hackman) to lead a team of replacement players for the rest of the season.
McGinty accepts the deal and forms the team his way. The centerpiece of the new squad is quarterback Shane Falco (Keanu Reeves), a former All-American whose career went downhill after choking in a big game. With Falco as the leader, McGinty fills in the rest of the squad with rejects and no-names. However, the team eventually comes together and bonds over their shared disappointments. Who knows? Maybe a team of bench guys can become legends.
