3 great Netflix crime movies about the mafia you should watch in January

HBO’s The Sopranos is celebrating its 25th anniversary this month, and it’s another reminder that the public just can’t seem to get enough of the mafia. The Godfather helped popularize mafia stories over five decades ago, and there always seems to be new material to explore in film and television.

Netflix doesn’t have The Sopranos or The Godfather for mafia aficionados, but it does have a lot of crime stories available to stream, only a few of which actually deal with the mafia. For this list, we’ve narrowed down the selections to three great Netflix movies about the mafia. But you may want to make your viewing plans soon, since our second selection, The Informer, is leaving Netflix at the end of January.

The Irishman (2019)

Netflix

Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman plays like an all-star lineup of movie mobsters, including the three lead actors: Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci, all of whom were digitally de-aged for certain portions of the film. And like many of Scorsese’s best crime epics, The Irishman is also based on real events. De Niro stars as Frank “The Irishman” Sheeran, a man whose loyalty to the Philadelphia mafia allows him to find work as a contract killer under mob boss Russell Bufalino (Joe Pesci).

Frank also becomes close to Teamsters head Jimmy Hoffa (Al Pacino), who won’t let a little thing like prison get in the way of holding on to power. However, Hoffa’s inability to back off eventually alienates his silent partners in the mafia, which may force Frank to make some hard choices about who he’s really loyal to.

The Informer (2019)

Instead of dealing with the Italian mafia, The Informer switches the focus to the Polish mafia. The Suicide Squad‘s Joel Kinnaman stars as Peter Koslow, a man who has been on the rise in the Polish mafia under the leadership of Ryszard “The General” Klimek (Eugene Lipinski). What The General doesn’t know is that Peter flipped for the FBI and is now working for Special Agent Erica Wilcox (Rosamund Pike) to put him away.

But just as Peter finally sees an end to his life of stealth, an undercover cop is murdered during a sting. The General then threatens Peter’s wife, Sofia Koslow (Blonde‘s Ana de Armas), to make sure that Peter continues running the drug operation from behind bars. Meanwhile, the FBI also expects Peter to keep spying for them, even though Wilcox’s boss, Keith Montgomery (Clive Owen), is looking to throw Peter under the proverbial bus in order to cover up his own mistakes.

The Equalizer 3 (2023)

The Godfather movies and The Sopranos tend to offer a more sanitized look at the mafia even when they regularly kill or maim people. The Equalizer 3 goes several steps further with its depiction of the Italian mafia, aka the Camorra. Marco Quaranta (Andrea Dodero) and his older brother, Vincent Quaranta (Andrea Scarduzio), are absolutely irredeemable as they unleash a wave of violence — including a car bombing and an impromptu amputation — to terrorize a small town in Italy into obeying their will.

Unfortunately for the Quaranta brothers, they’ve picked the town where Robert McCall (Denzel Washington) is convalescing after being seriously wounded. McCall has become very fond of the townspeople, and watching them get mistreated just pisses him off. When the Quaranta brothers fail to heed McCall’s warning to move their operations, he once again takes the law into his own hands.

3 rom-coms on Netflix you need to watch in March 2025
Two people stand in a field and walk.

Valentine's Day might have passed, but romance is still a major part of Netflix's movie selection. The romance genre page is home to some of the most popular romance movies of the last 30 years. Notting Hill, Miss Congeniality, Wedding Crashers, and Love, Actually are available to stream on Netflix.
This month, we have three rom-coms to watch on Netflix. Two of them are set in Italy, including the latest Netflix original, La Dolce Villa. The other Italian-set rom-com features an actress for one of the streamer's hit shows of 2024. Our third pick is a fantasy rom-com about childhood best friends who grow apart in their mid-20s.
We also have guides to the best movies to stream this week, the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on Max, and the best movies on Disney+.
Afterlife of the Party (2021)

Afterlife of the Party is more comedy than romance. It's more of a platonic rom-com where friendship is the relationship at play. Regardless, there are still plenty of laughs with supernatural twists. Cassie (Victoria Justice) and Lisa (Midori Francis) have been best friends since childhood. As they reach their mid-20s, the two girls are complete opposites. Cassie is a social butterfly, while Lisa remains an introvert.
After a night of drinking leads to an argument, a hungover Cassie trips on her walk to the bathroom and hits her head on the toilet. Cassie dies, but she can't get into heaven just yet. She must help three people, including Lisa, in five days or be forced to live in a version of hell called "below." Think of Afterlife of the Party as Ghost without the pottery scene and the murder.

Several workers with bags standing in a remote location looking scared in Severance.

The three underrated movies on Amazon Prime Video you need to watch in March 2025 fall into varying categories that qualify the movies as underrated. One broke records, yet critics refuse to give it two thumbs up. Another shares its name with one of the hottest shows streaming right now.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023)
The Super Mario Bros. Movie | Official Trailer

Even before it premiered, The Super Mario Bros. Movie was getting a lot of flak for the choice of Chris Pratt as the voice of the titular character. Following the debut of this adventure comedy film in theaters, critics still weren’t convinced that it was a hit. But The Super Mario Bros. Movie delighted fans and proved naysayers wrong.
The film explored an interesting dynamic whereby Bowser (Jack Black) was a softie with a deep love for Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy). Of course, this brought us that lovely gem of a Peaches song that kids sang for weeks after. The movie's mixed reviews are no match for its tremendous box office success, not to mention the fact that it broke a Guinness World Record to become the highest-grossing movie based on a video game and became the first movie based on a video game to gross more than $1 billion. It’s incredible to learn that with all these huge numbers, The Super Mario Bros. Movie only has a 59% Rotten Tomatoes critics score.

No Sudden Move (2021)

Since coming out of retirement in 2017, Steven Soderbergh has released nearly one movie per year. Hollywood is a better place when an innovative filmmaker like Soderbergh works at such a prolific rate. One of his more underrated offerings during this post-retirement phase is No Sudden Move, a period piece set in 1950s Detroit about a heist gone wrong.
A group of petty criminals — including Curt Jones (Don Cheadle), Ronald Russo (Benicio del Toro), and Charley (Kieran Culkin) — are tasked with stealing an important document. The group is supposed to hold an accountant's family at gunpoint so he can then steal the document from his boss's safe. Eventually, Curt and Ronald learn they've been set up. Why? That's what they need to find out, including who hired them. It's not Ocean's Eleven, but No Sudden Move is a fun time at the movies, thanks to an eclectic cast and a filmmaker who knows this genre inside and out.

Sully (2016)
Sully - Official Trailer [HD]
In your best Michael Rapoport voice, "Are you the pilot, Sully?" Tom Hanks plays pilot Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger in the dramatic retelling of the Miracle on the Hudson in Sully. On January 15, 2009, Sully and First Officer Jeff Skiles (Aaron Eckhart) are piloting a flight from LaGuardia Airport to Charlotte. Shortly after takeoff, a flock of birds crashed into both engines.
With little time to react, Sully successfully executes an emergency landing in the Hudson River. All 155 crew and passengers survived. It's a miraculous accomplishment, but the story doesn't stop there. An investigation into Sully's life-saving maneuver tries to smear the pilot's reputation. With a steady Clint Eastwood behind the camera and a stoic Hanks on screen, Sully is a fitting tribute to a humble hero who deserves praise despite never seeking it out.
