3 underrated movies on Max you need to watch in July 2024

Kristen Stewart and Jodie Foster in Panic Room.
Columbia Pictures

Although Max‘s lineup of movies doesn’t seem to be as plentiful as it used to be, it still has a very good selection of films spanning the dawn of cinema to the present. More importantly, Max isn’t limited to the Warner Bros. Pictures catalog, and there are some films from other studios. In fact, all three of this month’s choices for the three underrated movies on Max that you need to watch in July come from Universal or Sony.

Our first selection is one of the most adult-oriented American animated films to date, while the second was supposed to be the start of a franchise. Our final selection is a claustrophobic thriller that really deserves to find a new audience two decades after its release.

Beowulf (2007)

A shirtless man looks at a woman in Beowulf.
Paramount Pictures

Beowulf is one of the oldest heroes in English literature, and the 2007 animated film breathes new life into the legend thanks to a modernized script by Sandman creator Neil Gaiman and Roger Avary that establishes a strong link between Beowulf’s story as a young man and an epic battle much later in his life. Director Robert Zemeckis utilized nearly lifelike animation that’s very convincing at times.

Ray Winstone lends his voice and likeness to Beowulf, a warrior who is summoned to Denmark during the early years of the 6th century. King Hrothgar (Anthony Hopkins) wants Beowulf to slay the monster Grendel (Crispin Glover), who has been terrorizing his kingdom. However, the real threat is Grendel’s mother (Angelina Jolie), who can’t simply be defeated. She has long-term plans that not even Beowulf can defy.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011)

A woman looks to her left in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
Sony

For reasons that are difficult to understand, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo didn’t catch on in America like it did in Europe. In Sweden, all three of the original novels were turned into films, while David Fincher’s remake was the only American film based on any of the books (in this case, the first). The titular girl is Lisbeth Salander (Rooney Mara), an extremely fierce woman with a gift for hacking her way into anything.

James Bond actor Daniel Craig portrays Mikael Blomkvist, a disgraced journalist who recruits Lisbeth to help him solve a 40-year-old cold case. Someone in the Vanger family has been killing women for decades. But as Lisbeth and Mikael close in on the answers, the killer begins targeting them as well.

Panic Room (2002)

Jodie Foster and Kristen Stewart in Panic Room.
Columbia Pictures

By sheer coincidence, our third underrated movie on Max is also a David Fincher movie. Panic Room features Jodie Foster and a very young Kristen Stewart as Meg and Sarah Altman, the new renters of a home that has a high-tech panic room. And wouldn’t you know it, but the mother and daughter have to use the panic room on their first night. They also retreat so quickly that they accidentally leave Sarah’s diabetes medicine behind.

Unfortunately for the Altmans, the thieves — Junior (Jared Leto), Raoul (Dwight Yoakam), and Burnham (Forest Whitaker) — broke into their home specifically to get something in the panic room. As Sarah suffers from her diabetic symptoms, the crooks cut off the Altmans’ contact with the outside world and attempt to force them out of their hiding place.

3 underrated (HBO) Max movies you should watch this weekend (March 7-9)
Four brothers sit or stand alongside a fence.

Max is about to get a little creepy, thanks to the addition of Heretic, which arrives on March 7. When two Mormon missionaries (Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East) stop at the house of Mr. Reed (Hugh Grant), they become trapped in a labyrinth that will test their fate. The thrilling horror from Scott Beck and Bryan Woods is a terrific showcase for Grant, who has the time of his life playing a narcissistic villain.
If you've seen Heretic or want to watch something else, there are plenty of other routes to explore on Max. One of those paths involves underrated movies. Lucky for you, we have some recommendations, which include an ensemble rom-com, a tragic sports biopic, and an eye-opening drama from a recent Oscar winner.

He's Just Not That Into You (2009)

Unfortunately for romance advocates, ensemble rom-coms are a thing of the past. These stories were a good excuse to get a group of famous and attractive actors into one movie. These easy-to-digest movies are the perfect form of escapism. Today's pick is He's Just Not That Into You. The cast includes Jennifer Aniston, Ben Affleck, Ginnifer Goodwin, Drew Barrymore, Jennifer Connelly, Kevin Connolly, Justin Long, Scarlett Johansson, and Bradley Cooper.
Set in Baltimore, He's Just Not That Into You follows nine people who navigate love, dating, and everything in between. The standout characters include Gigi (Goodwin), who misreads romantic situations; Janine (Connelly), who thinks her husband (Cooper) might be lying to her; and Mary (Barrymore), a woman whose dates go nowhere. Is every storyline perfect? No, but there is enough romance and charm to keep you watching.

The Squid and the Whale (2005)

Noah Baumbach, known for directing the more popular Frances Ha and Marriage Story, tells the story of a dysfunctional family in the criminally underrated The Squid and the Whale. Set in 1980s Brooklyn, the indie comedy-drama revolves around the Berkmans, whose lives change for the worse when parents Bernard (Jeff Daniels) and Joan (Laura Linney) announce their divorce. This negatively affects their sons: 16-year-old Walt (Jesse Eisenberg) and his younger brother, Frank (Owen Kline). The rift between the family worsens when Bernard's pretentious intellectualism and Joan's newfound independence cause even more friction.
Bolstered by a semi-autobiographical lens that draws from Baumbach's own childhood and the efforts of producer Wes Anderson, the 2005 film is unflinching in its tragicomic approach to its story. It's an honest portrayal of the messiness of divorce, fully embracing awkward and unfiltered moments experienced by its unlikable characters. The Squid and the Whale's often quirky and subtle humor may alienate most viewers, but any fan of similar intimate and character-driven portraits of imperfect families should add this one to their watchlist.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023)
The Super Mario Bros. Movie | Official Trailer

Even before it premiered, The Super Mario Bros. Movie was getting a lot of flak for the choice of Chris Pratt as the voice of the titular character. Following the debut of this adventure comedy film in theaters, critics still weren’t convinced that it was a hit. But The Super Mario Bros. Movie delighted fans and proved naysayers wrong.
The film explored an interesting dynamic whereby Bowser (Jack Black) was a softie with a deep love for Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy). Of course, this brought us that lovely gem of a Peaches song that kids sang for weeks after. The movie's mixed reviews are no match for its tremendous box office success, not to mention the fact that it broke a Guinness World Record to become the highest-grossing movie based on a video game and became the first movie based on a video game to gross more than $1 billion. It’s incredible to learn that with all these huge numbers, The Super Mario Bros. Movie only has a 59% Rotten Tomatoes critics score.
