Sing Street (2016)

Lucy Boynton and Ferdia Walsh-Peelo in Sing Street (2) (2016)
The Weinstein Company

In 1980s Dublin, Conor (Ferdia Walsh-Peelo) is sick of his troubled home life and experiences being bullied at his strict Catholic school. The one positive is his crush on the cool girl, Raphina (Lucy Boynton). To impress her and escape his day-to-day struggles, Connor forms a band with a group of similarly misfit friends. The titular band draws inspiration from the era’s biggest acts — Duran Duran, The Cure, and The Jam — to create a nostalgic and eclectic sound that permeates most of the film.

Perhaps overshadowed by director John Carney’s previous hits (Once, Begin Again), Sing Street remains criminally underrated, never gaining the same mainstream traction despite arguably delivering the filmmaker’s most charming and heartfelt story. Its overly saccharine elements and naive optimism are soon forgotten thanks to the way its uplifting narrative pairs flawlessly with its irresistibly catchy soundtrack. It’s not exactly among the greatest musical movies of the new generation, but it’s undoubtedly an enchanting one that delivers humor and heart.

Someone Great (2019)

Not exactly in the mood for Netflix’s cheesy romance movies? Perhaps an unforgettable breakup film, Someone Great, is the pick for a night alone at home or with friends for Galentine’s. The 2019 film sees Jenny suffer the cost of an opportunity when, as a music journalist, she lands her dream job at Rolling Stone in San Francisco. Soon after, her long-term boyfriend Nate (LaKeith Stanfield) ends their nine-year relationship, unable to make long-distance work. Jenny is devastated but is eventually consoled by her best friends, Erin (DeWanda Wise) and Blair (Brittany Snow), who have one wild night full of spontaneous dancing, emotional confessions, random adventures, and lots and lots of tequila.

Someone Great features stellar performances and emotional storytelling but is too often dismissed as just another breakup movie. Directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, the film showcases how painful a breakup can be, but it also has a fantastic focus on the power of friendship, particularly among women. It’s a bittersweet ode to new beginnings and a promise that no matter how deep the heartache is, it won’t last forever.

The Half of It (2020)

Director Alice Wu’s The Half of It takes place in the small town of Squahamish, where the brilliant and introverted Ellie Chu (Leah Lewis) makes extra money writing essays for her classmates. When the stereotypical jock Paul Munsky (Daniel Diemer) asks her to help him woo Aster Flores (Alexxis Lemire) by ghostwriting love letters, Ellie reluctantly agrees — only to realize she has feelings for Aster herself. What starts as a simple transaction turns into an unexpected friendship between Ellie and Paul, which is obviously complicated by her unexpected emotions.

The Half of It remains underrated despite a positive reception, possibly because it defies the typical teen rom-com formula. It’s neither a straightforward love triangle nor a conventional LGBTQ+ romance, defying typical coming-of-age movie plots by forging its own path. It may occasionally suffer from awkward pacing, but even that goes with the film’s overall message of embracing the messy process of self-discovery. Don’t expect a grand romantic ending, as The Half of It instead strives to encourage self-acceptance, even if the way towards it is challenging.

3 great Max crime dramas you should watch in March 2025
Josh Hartnett stands covered in red light in Trap.

Few streaming services have a deeper library of good to great movies than Max. Unfortunately, Max also has one of the worst interfaces of any streaming service, which means that actually finding those movies can be hard.
Among the genres where Max excels, though, are crime movies. These movies run the gamut from detective stories to tense thrillers. Regardless of what they're about, many are worth your time. We've pulled together three crime dramas worth checking out this month.

Inherent Vice (2014)
Inherent Vice - Official Trailer [HD]

Adapting a Thomas Pynchon novel may seem like an impossible task, but Paul Thomas Anderson did exactly that with Inherent Vice, and successfully. Telling the story of Doc Sportello, a private detective working in 1970s Los Angeles who finds himself thrust into a conspiracy when his ex-girlfriend disappears, Inherent Vice is intentionally difficult to trace.

3 great Hulu movies you need to stream this weekend (March 7- 9)
Margot Robbie and Diego Calva in Babylon.

Hulu may drop most of its top movies for the month on the 1st, but it does offer a selection of fresh films every week even if the streamer doesn't always do a good job of promoting these new additions. Case in point: Babylon is coming to Hulu on March 8, and the streamer hasn't even added a page for the movie yet. Regardless, this overlooked gem is one of our picks for the three great Hulu movies that you need to stream this weekend.

Our remaining two picks include a very strong drama that's closing in on its 20th anniversary, as well as a comedy that fell under the radar despite its callbacks to an earlier era that make it even funnier.

3 great free movies to stream this weekend (March 7-9)
Simon Rex stands in a donut in Red Rocket.

Welcome back, Bong Joon Ho. It's been six years since Parasite, the spectacular thriller that became the first non-English-language film to win the Oscar for Best Picture. This weekend, Bong returns with his latest film, Mickey 17. The sci-fi comedy follows a disposable employee (Robert Pattinson) who returns as a clone after repeatedly dying on a colonization mission.
Mickey 17 is already generating positive reviews, which isn't surprising because of the talent behind the camera. In honor of Bong's return, one of the free movies to stream this weekend comes from his early filmography. The other two selections are dedicated to an Oscar-winning filmmaker and an acting legend who recently passed away.

Memories of a Murder (2003)

With all due respect to Barking Dogs Never Bite, Bong's second feature, Memories of a Murder, is the one that put him on the map. Based on a real-life South Korean serial killer, Memories of a Murder follows Park Doo-man (Song Kang-ho) and Seo Tae-yoon (Kim Sang-kyung), two detectives assigned to investigate a string of rapes and murders.
The two detectives possess different styles — Park is the aggressive investigator, while Seo relies more on scientific analysis. Essentially, the movie presents an old-school versus new-school approach to policing. The ruthlessness and brutality weigh heavily on both investigators, as it tests their ethics and values. Instead of an open-and-shut whodunit, Bong explores morality and human fallibility, resulting in one of the best murder mysteries of all time.
