Black Sails (2014-2017)

Black Sails | Official Trailer | STARZ

A prequel to Treasure IslandBlack Sails was originally produced at Starz but has become a hugely popular Netflix show in more recent years. The series follows Captain Flint, a hugely revered pirate who takes a young John Silver onto his crew.

As Flint fights for the survival of the pirate way of life and the debauchery of his native island, Black Sails chronicles a pirate’s life in all of its grimy, glorious detail. Although the show was produced for a relatively small budget, Black Sails has an impressive sense of scale and scope and will keep you coming back for more.

You can watch Black Sails on Netflix.

Murderville (2022)

Murderville | Official Trailer | Netflix

A brilliant comedy series that didn’t get the legroom it deserved, Murderville follows Will Arnett as a detective who works with a celebrity guest to solve a murder. The twist? There’s a script for the episode, but neither Arnett nor his guest knows what that script is, and they’re improvising the entire time.

Improv can create a variable TV product, and that’s perfectly understandable. What’s remarkable about Murderville is that the show remains consistently funny regardless of who the celebrity guest might be. It was a risky gamble for Netflix, but one that should definitely have been renewed.

You can watch Murderville on Netflix.

When They See Us (2019)

When They See Us: Limited Series | Teaser [HD] | Netflix

A bracing, difficult show that is nonetheless well worth watching, When They See Us tells the story of the Central Park Five from the time they are first accused of raping a jogger in Central Park.

As they deal with a justice system designed to see their race before their criminal records, they come to realize that the truth is not going to set them free. When They See Us is a show about injustice and the systemic racism that landed five young men in prison for a crime they didn’t commit, forever changing the course of their lives. Directed by Ava DuVernay, the series is hard to watch but also close to a masterpiece as one of the best true crime shows.

You can watch When They See Us on Netflix.

Noah Centineo in The Recruit.

Netflix is proud of its ability to offer subscribers something new to watch at basically all times. Every weekend we get a new series, reality show, or movie. Sometimes, you get all three.
If you've struggled to actually navigate all of the stuff available on the streaming platform, you're not alone. That's why we've pulled together this list of three shows that are worth your time this weekend and should keep you hooked no matter what you're interested in.

The Recruit (2022-)
The Recruit | Official Trailer | Netflix
Noah Centineo has made his entire career working for Netflix, and The Recruit allows him to flex his unique charm. The series follows a CIA lawyer who gets drawn into the action after one of the agency's assets threatens to reveal herself unless the CIA helps her clear her name.
While plenty of spy dramas can be rather serious, dour affairs, The Recruit is lighter on its feet than many of those shows and easier to watch. While the show definitely has its moments of real gravitas, The Recruit won't make you feel like you're doing homework.
You can watch The Recruit on Netflix.
The Madness (2024)
The Madness | Official Trailer | Netflix
Colman Domingo should have been a star for decades. But like they say, better late than never. The Madness follows Domingo as Muncie Daniels, a media pundit who is forced to prove his own innocence after he stumbles upon a murder in the Poconos.
Crucially, though, The Madness is also about Daniels's crisis of conscience as he realizes that he no longer believes in anything. The series is riveting from front to back and includes all the plot developments and production values required for a limited series with a hooky premise and real ideas.
You can watch The Madness on Netflix.
Orange Is the New Black (2013-2019)
Orange Is The New Black - Season 1 - Official Trailer [HD]
Calling Orange Is the New Black underrated when it first aired would have seemed silly. The show was one of Netflix's first original series, earning plenty of awards and critical recognition at the time. In the years since, the show and its many groundbreaking elements have been far more forgotten than they should have been.
Telling the story of a public relations executive who is sentenced to serve time in a minimum security prison for her association with a drug dealer, the show was a remarkably bracing, often hysterical series about the realities of life in prison and the prison system more generally. The first few seasons are brilliant, and while it does fall off to some extent, it remained excellent throughout its run.
You can watch Orange Is the New Black on Netflix.

Jiro Dreams of Sushi (2011)
Jiro Dreams of Sushi now on Netflix! | Netflix
A brilliant, surprisingly simple documentary about an expert craftsperson striving to do their work well, Jiro Dreams of Sushi follows Jiro Ono, a master sushi chef who demands excellence from everyone who works for him. As his son struggles to live up to his father's legacy, Jiro must reckon with his singular devotion to sushi and how it has distorted and warped his life.
At the same time, Jiro Dreams of Sushi gives you plenty of time to appreciate the delicacy and beauty of what Jiro accomplishes, making you think for just a moment that all of his sacrifices might have been worth it.
You can watch Jiro Dreams of Sushi on Amazon Prime Video.
Once Upon a Time in America (1984)
Once Upon a Time in America Trailer
An epic we don't often get today, Once Upon a Time in America tells the sprawling story of a young man living in New York's Lower East Side who slowly rises the ranks of the criminal underworld to become a crime boss.
A story as much about America as it is about its individual characters, the movie nonetheless features two incredible central performances from Robert de Niro and James Woods. As director Sergio Leone's final film, the movie is every bit the closing statement that any director could have hoped for.
You can watch Once Upon a Time in America on Amazon Prime Video.
Creed (2015)
Creed - Official Trailer [HD]
Making a legacy sequel to Rocky sounded like a terrible idea. Thankfully, it turned out to be exactly the opposite. Creed tells the story of Adonis Creed, the child of Apollo Creed, as he wrestles with his legacy and trains for an exhibition fight under the tutelage of Sylvester Stallon's Rocky Balboa.
Directed by Ryan Coogler, the movie is as triumphant as the first Rocky. It might be even more impressively directed. It doesn't defy the franchise's expectations, but it fulfills them so perfectly and features such an incredible central performance from Michael B. Jordan that it feels almost miraculous.
You can watch Creed on Amazon Prime Video.
