Want to win more than an extra five pounds this Thanksgiving? Enter these social media contests

Ah, Thanksgiving. Time to gather with family and friends, feast on succulent turkey, and voice our appreciation. Also, time for brands to launch Thanksgiving-themed social media contests you can enter if you’ve had enough of your drunk uncle or your infuriatingly successful cousin.

The president already pardoned Popcorn the Turkey based on social media reactions, but that’s not the only contest this weekend. Here are some of the best social media contests to give you an excuse to avoid your family over the holiday:

Whitening Lightening is giving away fancy teeth whitening products.

Just tweet what you’re thankful for to qualify for a chance to win. Not very creative – but it requires minimal effort to brighten your smile. Not surprisingly, most of the entries so far are fairly run-of-the-mill (lots of people thankful for their families) so perhaps you can gain their attention by tweeting something phrased more originally.

For athletic types, CoachUp wants photos of an active Thanksgiving.

People who share how they stayed active on our day of annual gluttony can win a $250 gift certificate to Dick’s Sporting Goods.

Might as well show off your turkey on Instagram.

… if the judges think your Thanksgiving spread is the best, you win access to a professional chef on the night of your choosing. Click the Instagram above to read the details.

Win an awesome camera by liking a low-calorie wine company’s Facebook page. Why not?

OK, so you have to post a picture of your dinner after you go to the Skinny Vine’s page. But you could win a Canon PowerShot A2500, which usually retails for around $100. Not bad … plus, beats weathering the crowds at Black Friday to score a better deal.

I paid Meta to ‘verify’ me — here’s what actually happened
An Instagram profile on an iPhone.

In the fall of 2023 I decided to do a little experiment in the height of the “blue check” hysteria. Twitter had shifted from verifying accounts based (more or less) on merit or importance and instead would let users pay for a blue checkmark. That obviously went (and still goes) badly. Meanwhile, Meta opened its own verification service earlier in the year, called Meta Verified.

Mostly aimed at “creators,” Meta Verified costs $15 a month and helps you “establish your account authenticity and help[s] your community know it’s the real us with a verified badge." It also gives you “proactive account protection” to help fight impersonation by (in part) requiring you to use two-factor authentication. You’ll also get direct account support “from a real person,” and exclusive features like stickers and stars.
